2021 was a funny vintage for Daniel & Jonas, a tricky start with heavy rain and crazy winds, ending with a mammoth eight-week harvest. "Normally we pick everything in one big go, in a three week push, but this year, everything was ripening at such unusual times it was really drawn out. It was hard!"
Not only was the harvest longer, but massive problems with 'Kirschessigfliege' (cherry vinegar fly) meant they had to make brutal selections in the red parcels, often taking well over an hour to even fill a bucket. 6 weeks in, with all the team due to finish for the season, the brothers realised they were nowhere near the finish line.
Pulling in helpers from near & far, the team was bolstered with a fresh energy that saw them over the final two weeks:

Available now from their wild 2021 are the latest editions of Pinot Noir Pur and Riesling Monastery.
The Pinot is picked from parcels about 45 years old over loess and shell limestone, has a seven day cold maceration, and a further seven days mash fermentation after a vigorous foot crush. Aged in older 500l and 225l barrels, bottled in August 2022. Unbelievably direct, with electric acidity, supple fruit and great length; one of our favourite vintages.
Monastery is picked from a very special single vineyard; the Klosterschaffnerei. The site is associated with a tithe barn used by the monastery at Wadgassen in the Middle Ages to collect taxes from the Bockenheim area. 50-year-old vines, foot crushed and mashed for 12 hours. Aged in old oak barrels for 8 months. Bottled in August 2022. Precise and dynamic, this is their fuller and boldest single parcel, brighter for 2021.
