Spring Blooms Eternal: Mataburro

After a little rest over winter we're thrilled to release a clutch of beautiful 2021 cuvees from Laurent & Melissa at Mataburro. Pitch-perfect wines for spring, these rarely hang around for long.

2021 was incredibly dry in Rivesaltes, with just 200ml of rainfall in total over the year.

Parched grapes were feeling the strain, so Laurent decided to do even shorter macerations than usual. The result is wines with an elegant balance, poised between the delicate nature we love in these, with the finest frame of structure supporting the vibrant fruit.

Otium & Idoine speak to the two sides of Laurent & Melissa's three hectares, with Otium picked from 80 year old Grenache Noir vines planted by Laurent's grandfather, and Idoine from 30 year old Merlot vines planted by Laurent's father.

Whilst all the vines have a bedrock of limestone, the Grenache vines are among galets roulés, and the Merlot vines begin on a deeper of clay.

Sourced from the youngest vines across each plot, Mura Mura is one of our favourite rosés, brightened with a little Muscat sourced from a friend.

We'll be pouring all three wines alongside their collaborative pet-nat Bulle Mataproduction at Monday's Trade Tasting at Eline.

Available now in limited quantities, no additions in any of these:

2021 - Idoine - Merlot

A five day whole bunch infusion-maceration of Merlot from 30 year old vines over clay, with a just little Macabeu from the old parcel by the river. Long, delicately framed.

2021 - Otium - Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, Macabeu

A five day whole bunch infusion of Grenache Noir, Gris and Macabeu from 80 year old vines. Super supple, juicy.

2021 - Mura Mura - Merlot, Grenache, Muscat

A two-day whole bunch infusion of younger-vine Merlot, Grenache and Muscat. Incredibly fresh, direct and pure this year, with such an invigorating minerality.
