Ham Street Wines is the project of husband & wife team Lucie & Jules, who planted four hectares of vines four years ago on the edge of the Romney Marsh.
Starting the project as a way of re-connecting with nature whilst still working full-time jobs in accounting, Lucie & Jules were quickly bitten by the regenerative agriculture bug, understanding that improving soil health, promoting biodiversity and doing as little as possible to disturb the natural balance was the key to healthy fruit, and happy wines.
Beginning in organic conversion (certified in 2022) they achieved biodynamic certification in 2024. They truly go above and beyond the minimum requirements, working with teas and plants, having been no-till since April 2020, working to the principles of regenerative agriculture. Their commitment to their vineyards is an inspiring reminder of what is possible for agriculture in the UK.
The winery beside the vineyard was completed ready to process the 2023 vintage on site. Lucie & Jules work delicately here - always with a sense of curiosity and experimentation - to produce alive, detailed expressions from their fruit - often celebrating single varieties, or working fruit in an unconventional method (for the UK at least) to tease alternate, complex profiles from their wines. Sulphur use is kept to an absolute minimum, movements are conducted by gravity and in accordance with the biodynamic calendar, and wines are never fined or filtered.
A delicately pale zero-sulphur pet nat from the edge of the Romney Marsh, packed with little red berries and a long saline finish. The label is a chromotography soil sample from their vineyards, a theme that will likely continue for all Ham Street releases!
